Is your pooch a beach bum?
Every dog breed is different, some are natural swimmers, some like a bit of a dip after being taught how, and some just enjoy a little paddle in the shallows. The labrador, golden retriever and Portuguese water dog owners out there have the built and bred for swimming furr babies. These are natural water dogs who love any excuse to dive in. However, some dogs are not built to be natural swimmers or even swimmers at all.
Breeds such as pugs, boston terriers, dachshunds, boxers, bulldogs and corgis are more likely to sink than swim. So before running head first into the waves with your woofer, check your dog is keen, and actually able to keep afloat. Always make sure your best bud wants to go for a dip and never force them or ever chuck a dog in the water and hope for the best.
Starting from the bottom..
It helps to get dogs used to the water when they are young. Keep them on a lead and introduce them to shallow and safe water and always keep an eye on them. Keep pool gates closed and just like children, you should never leave your pup unattended around water. Remember if you need to be water safe, then you need to keep your fur baby water safe too.
